Toronto Rd, Ilford Mini Arts Festival and Outdoor Cinema
Saturday 31st August 5pm-10pm
The Redbridge Green Fair piloted a small scale, low carbon mini arts festival in collaboration with local residents in Valentines Ward. This was funded by Community First (Community Development Foundation) to run activities to build community spirit in a deprived ward in Ilford.
This event was organised in 2 weeks with local residents on Toronto Road and a couple of roads nearby with everything coming from the Estate or within a mile radius (other than community artist Darcy Turner who cycled from Mile End). The ideas was conceived by Redbridge Green Fair chair Ros Southern. "I wanted to build on the success of the Green Fair's 2011 Big Green Lunch' and the 2013 Auckland Road Big Lunch (organised by my neighbour Oddie Rolland and me) - why not take the opportunity to close the small street alongside my house and enjoy a street level arts festival?!" The Redbridge Green Fair Association combines promoting environmental responsibility with celebrating and involving the Redbridge community. With support from the Green Fair the event was organised by 8 local residents (6 from Toronto Road) and 5 of them had never organised an event before: Carnette, Aisha, Maryam, Poonam, Edward. The whole event was organised from start to finish in 2 weeks! To see photos from the second event in 2015 click here |
