Solar Cinema

The Groovy Movie Picture House is the World's First Mobile Solar Powered Cinema. A comfortable, colourful, quirky big screen multimedia venue, powering state of the art digital video equipment with cutting edge alternative technology. Amazingly, this unique mobile cinema uses only electricity generated on location by our array of solar panels. During the day the sun charges our battery bank, which stores power to be used day or night. Energy efficiency is the key. The whole venue uses less power than a toaster.

For the past thirteen years, The Groovy Movie Picture House has been dedicated to screening independent, underground film and animations not what you will see at the local multiplex! This season we are proud to present special preview screenings of Nina Paley's brand new animated feature film Sita Sings the Blues; winner of many awards including: Boulder International Film Festival 09, best animation Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma, Grand Prize Annecy animation festival, Best feature film.

Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.”

This is an animation feature suitable for all ages

Eco-Village Pioneers

For a decade Helen, and her young son went in search of a sustainable way of life. Along the way she recorded the UK's most high profile campaigners on low impact living. She charted how Tony Wrench and his partner challenged and radically changed a council's policy on rural housing. Their unique, inexpensive eco-home made from oak, cobwood and recycled window walls, straw-insulated turf roof, with solar power for electricity, compost toilet and reed beds for grey water is now a proven example of what the Government needs to be providing.

Her journey took her to Crystal Waters Permaculture village in Australia, Sunseed Desert Technology centre in Spain, Findhorn spiritual community in Scotland, and the low impact settlement, Tinkers Bubble in Somerset England. Her trip also includes the world renowned Centre of Alternative Technology in mid Wales. The main strand of the film follows the story of Britain's first eco-villages to be developed in England and Wales.

Bike 2 Oz

A video series about the young British couple who successfully cycled the 12,000Km from Oxford (UK) to Sydney (Australia). Kevin and Lowanna filmed their entire cycle adventure across the UK, Europe, Pakistan, India, Iran, Malaysia and Australia.

Bike2Oz is the epic adventure of a young school teacher and a train worker in Oxford. After teaching her pupils about global warming, Lowanna decided she couldn't risk damaging the climate by flying home to Australia. With her partner Kevin, the couple travel the 12,000km to Sydney using only sustainable transport- the train, bicycle and cargo ship.

Pedalling through 16 countries over 485 days, the couple joined in Car Free day in Italy, escaped arrest in Iran, got groped in Pakistan and fell ill in India. Their journey brought them through storm ravaged forests in France, torrential downpours in the Mediterranean and severe drought in Iran.  The effects of Climate Change could be seen everywhere they went.

Watch the series and find out if their relationship (and the planet) survived the epic trip
